3GP is the video format of older mobile phones, from Nokia and Samsung feature phones to early Android devices. Many modern apps, editors and websites reject it. Convert 3GP to MP4 to share, edit or save those memories in a format that will keep working.
3GP vs MP4: what changes
3GP was built for slow mobile networks and small screens, so files are tiny and resolution is low, often 176 × 144 to 640 × 480 pixels. Audio is usually AMR or AAC. MP4 with H.264 and AAC is supported by every current phone, computer and social network.
When to convert 3GP to MP4
Use it when WhatsApp, Instagram or YouTube refuses a 3GP clip, when Windows or a Mac cannot play it, or when you want to back up old phone videos in a future-proof format.
Before you convert
The video keeps its original small resolution, so it will look soft on a big screen. Converting cannot add detail, but it fixes playback and upload problems. Phone-call style AMR sound is converted to AAC.
Common problems and fixes
Videos from my old phone will not play
3GP was the video format of early mobile phones. Converting to MP4 makes them playable on modern phones, computers and TVs.
The video is tiny and blurry
3GP videos were usually 176 × 144 or 320 × 240 pixels. The MP4 keeps that resolution; enlarging would only make blur bigger.
Sound is crackly
Old phone microphones recorded low-quality AMR audio, which is converted to AAC as it is. Converting cannot clean up the original noise.

Frequently asked questions
Will the MP4 file be bigger than the 3GP?
Often a little, because H.264 at good quality uses more data than the very low bitrate of old phones. It is still small.
Is 3G2 supported?
Yes. 3G2 files from older CDMA phones convert the same way.
