Make a favicon for your website or an icon for a Windows shortcut from any PNG. The ICO file you download contains six sizes, from 16 × 16 up to 256 × 256 pixels, so it looks sharp in browser tabs, bookmarks, the taskbar and on the desktop.

PNG vs ICO: what changes

PNG is a single image at one size. ICO is a container that holds several sizes of the same icon, and Windows and browsers pick the best one for each place it is shown. The icons inside this ICO are stored as PNG, which keeps transparency and is supported by Windows Vista and later and by every current browser.

When to convert PNG to ICO

Use it when your website builder or CMS asks for a favicon.ico, when you want a custom icon for a folder or shortcut in Windows, or when an app installer needs an .ico file.

Before you convert

Icons are square. If your PNG is not square, it is centred and the empty space is left transparent. Detailed logos become hard to read at 16 pixels, so a simple symbol or one letter usually works best. Start from a PNG of at least 256 × 256 pixels for the sharpest large sizes.

Tips for converting PNG to ICO

Design the icon on a square canvas with a little padding around the edges. Check the result at small sizes: if the 16-pixel version is unreadable, simplify the design or use just your logo’s symbol.

Common problems and fixes

My favicon looks blurry in the browser tab

At 16 and 32 pixels, detailed logos turn to mush. Use a simplified square icon with bold shapes, and start from a PNG of at least 256 × 256.

My rectangular logo looks squashed

Icons are square. A wide image is fitted inside the square with transparent padding, so crop your logo to a square first for the best result.

The browser still shows the old favicon

Browsers cache favicons for a long time. Clear the cache or open the site in a private window to see the new one.
