How it works

1

Choose your photo

Use a recent photo taken straight on, against a plain white or off-white wall, with even light and no glasses. iPhone HEIC works too.

2

Pick the preset

DS-160 / DV Lottery for online forms, or the printed 2 × 2 inch photo for paper passport applications. The photo is cropped to a square around your face.

3

Check and download

Look at the preview: your head should fill about half to two thirds of the height. Download the JPG and upload it, or print it at 2 × 2 inches.

US passports and visas use a square photo: 2 × 2 inches on paper and 600 × 600 pixels (up to 1200 × 1200) as a digital file of 240 KB or less. That digital file is what the DS-160 visa form and the Diversity Visa (Green Card) Lottery ask you to upload, and a photo that breaks the rules is one of the most common reasons applications are delayed. This tool crops your photo to the right square, sets the size and keeps it under 240 KB.

The official US photo rules in short

Size: 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm) printed; 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pixels digital, square, in colour (24-bit sRGB), JPEG, 240 KB or less.

Head: from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head between 1 and 1 3/8 inches (25 to 35 mm), which is 50 to 69 percent of the photo height. Face the camera directly with a neutral expression and both eyes open.

Background: plain white or off-white, no shadows. Taken in the last six months. No glasses, unless a signed medical statement says you cannot remove them. No hats or head coverings except for religious or medical reasons, and the full face must be visible.

No filters, beauty apps or digital edits to your face. Resizing and cropping are fine; changing how you look is not.

Taking a photo at home that passes

Stand about 1 to 1.5 metres from a plain white wall so no shadow falls behind you. Face a window for soft, even light. Ask someone else to take the photo at your eye level from about 1.2 metres away; selfies distort the face and are often rejected.

Leave space above your head and around your shoulders. The tool crops a square around the most important area, and you want your whole head and the top of your shoulders inside it.

Check the preview: if your head looks too small or too big, crop the original closer or wider in your phone’s photo editor and run it again.

Frequently asked questions

What is the US visa photo size in pixels?

At least 600 × 600 and at most 1200 × 1200 pixels, square. 600 × 600 is the safest choice and is what this tool’s first preset makes.

What is the maximum file size?

240 KB for the digital photo. The preset keeps the file at or under 240 KB at the best quality that fits.

Does this check that my photo will be accepted?

No tool can promise acceptance. This one gets the size, shape, format and file size right; background, lighting, expression and head position are up to the photo you upload. The consular officer makes the final decision.

Can I wear glasses?

No. Glasses are not allowed in US passport and visa photos unless you have a signed medical statement.

How do I print a 2 × 2 photo?

Use the printed preset, download the JPG and print it at exactly 2 × 2 inches. Many photo kiosks and online print services can place several 2 × 2 photos on one 6 × 4 print.
