How it works

1

Choose your photo

A recent, sharp photo against a plain light background, facing the camera with a neutral expression.

2

Pick the preset

The photo is cropped to 35 × 45 mm around your face at 300 or 600 DPI, or kept under a KB limit for uploads.

3

Print or upload

Print at exactly 35 × 45 mm on photo paper, or upload the JPG to the visa form.

All 29 Schengen countries use the same biometric photo format for visas: 35 mm wide and 45 mm high, in colour, against a plain light background, with your face filling most of the height. The same size is used for passports and ID cards across most of Europe and much of the world. This tool crops your photo to exactly that shape and saves it at print quality.

Schengen photo requirements

Size 35 × 45 mm. The face, from chin to crown, should take up about 70 to 80 percent of the photo height, which is roughly 32 to 36 mm. Look straight at the camera, mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible.

Plain, light background (white or light grey) with no shadows or patterns. Taken recently, usually within the last six months. No hats or head coverings except for religious reasons, and glasses only if they do not reflect light or hide your eyes; many consulates prefer no glasses at all.

Rules can differ slightly between consulates and visa centres. Always check the checklist from the embassy or visa centre handling your application.

Getting the head size right

The crop is placed over your face automatically, but how big your head ends up depends on the original photo. If your head looks too small in the preview, crop the original closer to your head and shoulders in your phone’s editor and run it again. If the top of your head is cut off, start from a photo with more space above you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Schengen visa photo size in pixels?

There is no single pixel rule for printed photos. At 300 DPI, 35 × 45 mm is 413 × 531 pixels; at 600 DPI it is 827 × 1063 pixels. Both presets are available.

Can I use the same photo as for my passport?

Often yes, if your passport also uses 35 × 45 mm and the photo is recent. The visa photo must be taken within the time your consulate specifies, usually six months.

Is a white background required?

A plain light background is required; white or light grey are both commonly accepted. Avoid coloured or patterned walls.

How do I print it at the right size?

Print the JPG at 35 × 45 mm, not “fit to page”. Photo shops can put several on one 6 × 4 inch print.
