How it works

1

Choose your photo

Use a recent, sharp photo against a plain light background (cream or light grey works well), taken by someone else at eye level.

2

Pick online or printed

For an online application the photo is kept uncropped and saved between 50 KB and 10 MB. For paper forms it is cropped to 35 × 45 mm at 300 DPI.

3

Download

Check the preview and size, then upload the JPG to your application or print it at 35 × 45 mm.

Applying for or renewing a UK passport online needs a digital photo, while paper forms still need two printed 35 × 45 mm photos. The online service is strict about the file: it must be at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels high, between 50 KB and 10 MB, and not cropped by you. This page prepares both versions from one photo, including photos straight from an iPhone.

UK digital photo rules

At least 600 × 750 pixels, between 50 KB and 10 MB, in colour, and not changed by filters or editing software. Do not crop it: the passport service crops it for you, which is why the online preset keeps the full picture and only checks size and file size.

The photo should be clear and in focus, against a plain, light-coloured background, with no shadows on your face or behind you. Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression and your mouth closed. Do not wear sunglasses or tinted glasses, and nothing should cover your face.

Printed 35 × 45 mm photos

Paper applications need two identical photos, 45 mm high and 35 mm wide, on photo paper. Your head, from chin to crown, should be between 29 and 34 mm tall in the printed photo.

The printed preset crops to that exact shape at 300 DPI (413 × 531 pixels). Print it at 35 × 45 mm without “fit to page” scaling, or place several copies on a 6 × 4 inch print.

Why online photos get rejected

The most common problems are a file that is too small (screenshots and messaging-app copies are often under 600 × 750 pixels or 50 KB), shadows, a busy background, and heavy phone “beauty” processing. Use the original photo from your camera roll, not one saved from WhatsApp or social media, because those apps shrink images.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a UK digital passport photo?

At least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels high, and between 50 KB and 10 MB. There is no fixed maximum pixel size.

Why does the online preset not crop my photo?

GOV.UK asks you to upload the photo uncropped; their system crops it. The preset therefore keeps your full picture and only makes sure the pixel and file size are right.

My file is under 50 KB. Will this fix it?

Yes. With the online preset, the photo is saved at higher quality and, if still needed, padded to at least 50 KB without changing the picture. If the photo itself is smaller than 600 × 750 pixels, use the original from your camera instead.

Can I take my UK passport photo with a phone?

Yes. Have someone else take it at eye level against a plain light wall in daylight, then prepare it here.

Does this guarantee my photo is accepted?

No tool can. This sets the size and file correctly; lighting, background and expression depend on the photo itself.
