How it works

1

Choose a PDF

Tap the box or drag one or more PDF files onto it, up to 50 MB each.

2

Convert to Word

Press Convert. Text, paragraphs, tables, images and page layout are rebuilt as a real Word document.

3

Download the DOCX

Save the .docx file and open it in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, WPS or LibreOffice to edit. The PDF is deleted from our server afterwards.

A PDF is made to be read, not edited. When you need to change a CV, update an old contract, fix a typo in a report or reuse text from a document someone sent you, the easiest route is to turn the PDF back into a Word file. This converter rebuilds each page as an editable DOCX document: paragraphs stay paragraphs, tables become real Word tables, and images and page layout are kept, so you edit instead of retyping.

What gets converted, and how well

The converter reads the text, fonts, positions, tables and images inside the PDF and rebuilds them as Word content. Headings, bold and italic text, bullet lists, columns, tables and pictures come through, and each PDF page starts a new Word page.

PDFs exported from Word, Google Docs or another program (sometimes called “digital” or “native” PDFs) convert best, because the real text is stored inside them. Most invoices, CVs, reports and e-books are this kind.

Complex designs such as magazine layouts, forms with many boxes, or text placed on top of pictures may need small fixes after converting, for example a line that wraps differently because a font is not installed on your computer.

Scanned PDFs need OCR first

A scanned PDF is really a set of photos of pages; it contains no text that a converter can read. Converting it to Word gives you a document with those page images, which you still cannot edit as text.

If you see the “looks scanned” notice after converting, use the Image to Text tool on the pages (or on a screenshot of them) to recognise the words with OCR, then paste the text into your document.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PDF to Word for free?

Upload the PDF on this page and press Convert. A few seconds later you can download an editable .docx file. There is no sign-up, watermark or page limit beyond the 50 MB file size.

Will the formatting stay the same?

Text, headings, tables, images and the page layout are kept for normal PDFs. Very complex designs may need small touch-ups, and lines can wrap slightly differently if the PDF uses a font your computer does not have.

Can I convert a scanned PDF to editable Word?

A scanned PDF holds pictures of pages, not text, so the Word file will contain those pictures. To get editable text from a scan, use the Image to Text (OCR) tool.

Which programs open the DOCX file?

Microsoft Word (2007 and newer), Word on Android and iPhone, Google Docs, WPS Office, Apple Pages and LibreOffice all open DOCX files.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

Not directly. Open the PDF with its password and save or print it as a new PDF without a password, then convert that copy.

Are my files kept on your server?

No. Each PDF is converted in a private temporary folder that is deleted as soon as the Word file is sent back to you.
