iPhones and iPads save photos as HEIC by default. The files are small and look great, but Windows PCs, many Android phones, older apps and most upload forms cannot open them. Convert HEIC to JPG and the photo opens everywhere, at the same resolution, in a few seconds.
HEIC vs JPG: what changes
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) stores a photo in roughly half the space of a JPG at similar quality, using the same HEVC compression Apple uses for video. JPG is older and less efficient, but it is the one image format every phone, computer, printer kiosk, government portal and social network accepts. The JPG you get here is usually about twice the size of the HEIC, which is the price of universal compatibility.
When to convert HEIC to JPG
Convert when a website or form says your file type is not supported, when you send photos to someone on Windows or Android, when you upload to a print shop, or when a photo editor shows a blank thumbnail. If you want every future photo as JPG, change Settings › Camera › Formats to ‘Most Compatible’ on your iPhone.
Before you convert
A Live Photo is converted as its still image only; the short video part is not included. Camera details and GPS location stored in the HEIC are not copied into the JPG, which is good for privacy but means the photo will not show where it was taken. Photos converted this way are upright even if the original relied on a rotation flag.
Tips for converting HEIC to JPG
Sending photos by AirDrop or attaching them in the iPhone Mail app often converts them to JPG automatically, so you may only need this tool for files that arrive as .heic. If you shoot many photos for websites or clients, setting the camera to ‘Most Compatible’ avoids the extra step.
Convert HEIC to JPG on any device
On iPhone, open this page in Safari, tap the upload box, choose ‘Photo Library’ and pick the photo. iOS may offer to convert it on the way, which is fine. On Windows, copy the photos from your iPhone with the Photos app or a cable, then drag a .heic file onto the box. On Android, HEIC photos usually arrive through WhatsApp documents, Google Drive or email; download the file first, then choose it from Files.
Common problems and fixes
My photo is sideways after converting elsewhere
iPhones store rotation separately. This converter applies it, so the JPG comes out the right way up.
Live Photos lost the moving part
A Live Photo is a still image plus a short video. JPG keeps the still; export the video part from the Photos app if you need it.
I want iPhone to stop saving HEIC
On the iPhone go to Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?
Since iOS 11 the camera uses ‘High Efficiency’ mode, which saves photos as HEIC to use about half the storage. You can switch to JPG for new photos under Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible.
Will the JPG have the same quality and size in pixels?
It keeps the full resolution, for example 4032 × 3024 for most iPhone photos, and is saved at high JPG quality. The file in megabytes is usually larger than the HEIC because JPG compression is less efficient.
Can I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows without an app?
Yes. Open this page in any browser, drag the .heic file onto the upload box and download the JPG. You do not need the HEIF or HEVC extensions from the Microsoft Store.
Is the GPS location kept in the JPG?
No. Camera details and location are not copied, so you can share the JPG without revealing where the photo was taken.
