iPhone videos, Mac screen recordings and QuickTime movies are saved as MOV. Convert MOV to MP3 to keep just the sound, for example a speech, a song you recorded or an interview, in a file that plays on any device.
MOV vs MP3: what changes
MOV is Apple’s video container and often holds large HEVC or H.264 video, especially when recorded in 4K. The MP3 contains only the audio track and is typically a tiny fraction of the size, which makes it easy to send on WhatsApp, upload to a podcast host or keep on your phone.
When to convert MOV to MP3
Use it for voice memos recorded as video, concert clips, family recordings, Zoom or Mac screen recordings, or any MOV where only the sound matters.
Before you convert
iPhone videos can be very large. Files up to 200 MB are accepted; for longer recordings, trim the video in the Photos app first. Spatial or multi-channel audio is mixed into a standard stereo MP3.
Common problems and fixes
My iPhone video is too big to upload
Long 4K iPhone videos pass 200 MB quickly. Trim the clip in Photos first, or record at 1080p for clips you want the audio from.
The MP3 has background noise
Phone microphones pick up wind and room noise, and converting keeps it. A noise-reduction tool in an audio editor can clean it up.
Will spatial audio from my iPhone survive?
No. MP3 holds at most two channels (stereo), so the surround effect of spatial audio recordings is not kept.
