“The file is damaged and could not be repaired”, “Failed to load PDF document”, blank pages, or a reader that freezes: PDFs get damaged by interrupted downloads, broken email attachments, faulty USB sticks and buggy software. Often most of the content is still inside the file, only the index that tells readers where pages are is broken. This tool rebuilds that structure and saves a clean PDF.
How the repair works
Your file goes through up to three independent repair engines. The first rebuilds the cross-reference table (the PDF’s index) and fixes broken object lengths. If that fails, the second re-reads every page and writes a brand-new PDF. The third uses a different recovery parser as a last resort.
The first engine that produces a readable file wins, so you get the best result without having to try different tools yourself.
What can and cannot be recovered
Files with a damaged index, missing end-of-file markers, wrong lengths or small corrupted sections usually repair fully. If part of the file is physically missing (a download that stopped halfway), the pages in the missing part cannot come back, but the pages before it often can.
Files that are not PDFs at all (for example an HTML error page saved with a .pdf name) cannot be repaired. Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first.
Where this comes in handy
Broken email attachments
Recover PDFs that arrived damaged and will not open.
Interrupted downloads
Salvage the pages that did download completely.
Files from old drives
Fix PDFs copied from faulty USB sticks or memory cards.
Software errors
Clean up PDFs that crash readers or show errors when printing.
Frequently asked questions
How do I fix a corrupted PDF?
Upload the PDF here and press Repair. Download the repaired copy and open it in your PDF reader.
Can every PDF be repaired?
Most structurally damaged PDFs can. Content that is physically missing from the file cannot be recovered.
Why does my PDF say it is damaged?
Usually because its internal index or end-of-file marker is broken, often after an interrupted download or copy.
Will the repaired file look different?
Pages that are recovered look the same. Missing or badly damaged parts may be blank.
Are my files kept?
No. Each PDF is processed in a private temporary folder that is deleted right afterwards.
