Convert FLAC to WAV when a program, DJ controller, CD burning tool or older device does not support FLAC. Both formats are lossless, so the music sounds exactly the same; WAV simply stores it uncompressed.
FLAC vs WAV: what changes
FLAC compresses audio without throwing anything away, usually to about half to two thirds of the WAV size. WAV is the plain, uncompressed version that every audio program understands. Converting between them is lossless at CD quality: you trade disk space for compatibility.
When to convert FLAC to WAV
Use it for burning an audio CD, importing into DJ software or hardware that skips FLAC, editing in older audio programs, or sending stems to a studio that works in WAV.
Before you convert
The WAV is saved as 16-bit PCM, which is CD quality and identical for normal 16-bit FLAC files. High-resolution 24-bit FLAC is reduced to 16-bit, which is inaudible for listening but worth knowing for studio work. Tags such as artist and album are not reliably kept in WAV.
Common problems and fixes
My DJ or editing software does not read FLAC
Many DJ controllers, samplers and older editors only take WAV. The converted WAV has exactly the same sound as your FLAC.
The file doubled in size
FLAC compresses losslessly; WAV does not compress at all. Converting back to WAV restores the full, larger size.
High-resolution tracks are over the limit
A long 24-bit/96 kHz track in WAV can be very large, but the upload size counts the FLAC, so most tracks under 200 MB work.

Frequently asked questions
Is FLAC to WAV lossless?
Yes for standard CD-quality FLAC (16-bit). The audio samples are identical; only the storage changes.
Why is the WAV bigger?
FLAC compresses the audio losslessly, while WAV stores it uncompressed. WAV files are typically 1.5 to 2 times larger.
