Convert a WebP image, including animated WebP stickers and clips saved from websites, into a GIF. Animations keep their frames and timing, and the GIF plays in email, chat apps, forums and older software that cannot show WebP.
WebP vs GIF: what changes
WebP supports full colour, transparency and animation in a much smaller file. GIF is far older and limited to 256 colours, but it is the animation format that works almost everywhere. Converting makes the file bigger and can add slight banding in smooth gradients, in return for maximum compatibility.
When to convert WebP to GIF
Use it when an animated sticker or meme saved from the web will not play in your chat app or email, when a forum accepts only GIF, or when you need a GIF for older software.
Before you convert
GIF transparency is on or off, so soft, semi-transparent edges become hard edges. Photos and gradients lose some smoothness because of the 256-colour limit. A still WebP becomes a single-frame GIF; for still images PNG or JPG is usually better.
Tips for converting WebP to GIF
Keep animations short. A few seconds of animation is fine as a GIF, but long clips get very large. For long animations, an MP4 video is a much smaller alternative.
Common problems and fixes
The GIF looks grainy
GIF can only use 256 colours, while WebP has millions. Photographic animations show dithering; cartoons and stickers look much cleaner.
The GIF is far larger than the WebP
GIF compresses animation poorly, so the file often grows several times. Use GIF only where WebP is not accepted, such as some messaging apps.
Semi-transparent edges look jagged
GIF pixels are either fully transparent or fully solid, so soft shadows and anti-aliased edges become hard.

Frequently asked questions
Will my animated WebP still move?
Yes. Animated WebP files are converted frame by frame into an animated, looping GIF.
Why is the GIF larger than the WebP?
GIF compression is much less efficient than WebP, especially for animations. A GIF several times larger than the WebP is normal.
