Make a looping GIF from an iPhone video or a Mac screen recording. GIFs play automatically in chats, emails, documentation, support tickets and pull requests, where a video file would need to be downloaded or clicked first.

MOV vs GIF: what changes

MOV is a full video with sound and high resolution. A GIF is a silent animation limited to 256 colours that plays everywhere without a player. To keep the file practical, the GIF is made at 12 frames per second and up to 480 pixels wide, using a colour palette built from your video for the cleanest result.

When to convert MOV to GIF

Use it to show a bug or a feature in a screen recording, to reply with a reaction clip, to add motion to a slide or README, or to share a short moment from an iPhone video.

Before you convert

Keep clips short: a few seconds is ideal. GIF files grow quickly, and a one-minute clip can be tens of megabytes. Sound is removed. For longer clips, MOV to MP4 gives a far smaller file.

Convert MOV to GIF on any device

On iPhone, trim the video in Photos first (Edit, then drag the ends of the timeline), then open this page in Safari, tap the upload box and choose the video. On a Mac, record the screen with Shift-Command-5, then drag the MOV onto the box.

Common problems and fixes

My iPhone screen recording GIF is huge

Screen recordings are high resolution. The GIF is limited to 480 pixels wide and 12 frames per second, but trim it to the few seconds you need for a small file.

The GIF has no sound

GIF cannot store audio. Share the video if sound matters.

Fast movement looks choppy

At 12 frames per second, quick motion can stutter. That keeps the file size down; slower scenes look smoother.
